Bangs

I recently participated in data collection at a local retirement community.  I was interviewing a sprite gentleman of 76 years who, after I'd tucked an unruly chunk of hair behind my ear multiple times, kindly asked me, "Why is it that you girls wear your bangs so long these days?"

Before I had time to answer he offered, "I think you girls like to cover up your face to draw attention to it."

At the time I smiled and admitted that he was probably right.  But, upon further reflection, I totally disagree.  I think us girls wear mascara and lip gloss to draw attention to our faces.  We wear our bangs long and swept to the side because it's cool.  It's edgy, it's fun, it's chic.

And chic rules.

Exclamation: Point or Points?

Everything old is new again.

A long time ago, when computers made cool noises while connecting to the internet and cordless home telephones were a big deal, one exclamation point seemed to be sufficient.  But with the onset and stickiness of text messages, blogs and facebook we, myself included, have gradually shifted towards the double exclamation point.  It just feels felt more sincere.

Maybe it's my new haircut, maybe I am growing up or maybe it's just the proverbial itch to be different, but I feel myself leaning back towards the singlet.

Here's to breaking habits!

Project Runway

Have any of ya'll be watching the new season?  I was astonished by Ra'mon's dismissal but after I was able to calm down I sympathized with Louise and realized she made a great point about having had no feedback from the judges - good or bad.  But even more painful than the Ra'mon's premature departure was the announcement of the winner.  Nicholas sucks.  He is a greasy haired gossip with no talent; did you see the look on his model's face when they called his name?  He will NOT be in the final three and it's time to trim the fat, judges!!

And btw... where are you, Nina and Michael??

Baby It's Cold Outside

October 1.  39 degrees Fahrenheit.  Ostensibly, falls lasts all of about 3 days in Ann Arbor.  It's cool though, I forgot how comfortable my Uggs are and my hair looks great with no humidity.

Suffering from Uncharacteristic Insomnia

That is not the whole truth (I'm a terrible liar).  I'm sensitive, chemically speaking, and the iced cafe americano I imbibed at 4:00 PM this afternoon is preventing my eyelids from shutting for the night.  Will talking about dreaming coerce the caff to vacate my veins?  Let's find out.

Dream a little dream?
Heck no!
Dream a big fat weird dream,
Apropos:
Last night I saw a mammal, hairy and huge;
Though I remember not which kind.
Our fascist gov'ment had a frat facade,
And the two were intertwined.
In a curious, nonviolent twist
Police carried plungers instead of guns;
And interviews were taken
By invisible monks and nuns.

Dearest, dearest, dearest brain
Why must my dreams be strange?
I'll quit the late day coffee,
If you agree to change.

Embracing the Frizz

A while back I skimmed an article in Vogue encouraging women to embrace the weather's (usually negative) effects on their hair; namely frizz. Words to live by?

I once knew a notoriously picky eater who always ordered her steaks medium well. One day an incompetent waiter delivered her fillet medium. When she opened her mind (and her mouth) wide enough to forgive this "mistake", the course of her cosmic cuisine destiny was altered forever.

Today I am struck full force by the charm of life's wrong turns, maybe because today is my last day as a paralegal. I never envisioned myself working for attorneys and certainly never envisioned this job provoking the mildly embarrassing redaction of my promise never to open another text book again. Never say never, especially regarding graduate school.

If striving for perfection will drive you bananas, will embracing imperfection yield yummy banana nut bread?
